Congratulations to all our scholars!! It is not easy to pursue a DI sport like this and to take care of the school business too.

Particularly congrats to Ryan Sullivan. He is a credit to the program.

Best of luck to all of you next year!

Susan S.

Sullivan named Top Scholar-Athlete by Hockey East

WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- Sophomore defenseman Ryan Sullivan (Toronto, Ont.) led a list of seven Warriors honored for their academic achievements during the 2004-05 season by Hockey East.

Sullivan was named as the league's Top Scholar-Athlete, recording a 3.97 grade-point average (GPA) to lead all Hockey East players. It is the second highest GPA ever recorded by a league player, and the third time in four years that a Merrimack player has been accorded this honor. Six Warriors have received the award since its inception in 1992.

Sullivan was named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team and was also one of six league players honored as Academic All-Stars for recording the best grade-point averages by position.

Other Warriors named to the All-Academic Team were sophomore defenseman Brian Boulay (Shrewsbury, Mass.), junior defenseman Scott Drewicki (St. Albert, Alb.), senior goaltender Casey Guenther (Boissevain, Man.), senior defenseman Peter Hams (Cambridge, Mass.), junior forward Nick Pomponio (Livonia, Mich.), and junior defenseman Bryan Schmidt (Bloomington, Minn.).

Guenther, Hams, Pomponio and Sullivan were named for the second time in their Warrior careers. Only two other Hockey East schools placed more student-athletes on the team. Massachusetts-Lowell led with 17, while Maine ranked second with 10.

The All-Academic Team was instituted by Hockey East in 1989. To be named to the team, a student-athlete must record a 3.0 or better GPA in each of the two semesters during which he is playing hockey.
