Game Recap

Warriors Fall To Minutemen, 5-2

Saturday, March 1, 2003

North Andover, Mass. -- Greg Mauldin (Holliston, MA) scored twice and added an assist while Stephen Werner (Chevy Chase, MD) added a goal and three assists to lead UMass (17-16-1, 10-14-0) to a 5-2 victory over Merrimack (12-16-6, 7-13-4) and a sixth place finish in Hockey East. Ryan Cordeiro (Somerset, MA) scored both goals for the Warriors, who finish in seventh place in the league standings.

UMass got on the board first, scoring 13:34 into the game on a Matthew Anderson (West Islip, NY) goal. Mauldin carried the puck up the left boards and just before skating behind the net, fed Anderson in front. Mauldin then put the Minutemen up 2-0 with a similar 2-on-1 situation. Werner took the puck toward the net, waited to get both Warrior goaltender Joe Exter (Cranton, RI) and a defenseman to charge before slipping the puck over to Mauldin who one-timed it.

The Warriors pulled within one at the 8:17 mark of the second period when Cordeiro put back a rebound off a shot by Bryan Schmidt (Bloomington, MN). Mike Warner (Waltham, MA) put UMass back up by two at the 15:22 mark. After Exter saved a pair of shots, Warner was in front to lift the puck high into the net.

Cordeiro closed the gap back to two with his fifth goal of the season at the 9:07 mark of the third period. From the left circle, Nick Cammarata (Canton, MA) flipped a backhand toward the net that Cordeiro tipped in. UMass answered just 13 seconds later when Werner threw the puck at the net from the right boards and it found its way through the pads of Exter. Mauldin added an empty net goal at the 19:09 mark to seal the victory.

Gabe Winer (Stoughton, MA) stopped 24 shots in the victory while Exter made a season-low 14 saves for the Warriors.

The Warriors open play in the Hockey East Quarterfinals on Thursday at second seed Boston College. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
